Te Wharehou O Tuhoe

Te Wharehou O Tuhoe is the tribal headquarters for Tuhoe (Te Uru Taumatua) and includes a meeting hall, administration building and a solar panel support structure.

Key design features:

  • The project is the first in New Zealands to apply the Living Building Challenge (the most strict sustainability criterion that can be applied to buildings).
  • The structural systems were designed to minimize embodied energy and carbon emissions.
  • The structure was design to have minimal structural damage under a large earthquake and provide¬†emergency shelter to the surrounding community.
  • Three structural components in this project were world firsts: Post-tensioned round timber wall panels, round timber floor panels and hollow timber piles.
